Climax Foods has announced the launch of its multi-award-winning Climax Blue cheese on the grocery delivery service Good Eggs, available in the San Francisco Bay Area and Los Angeles. Climax Blue, a bold and creamy plant-based alternative to traditional dairy blue cheese, boasts 15% protein and is free from major allergens. The cheese is crafted from clean-label ingredients such as pumpkin seeds, coconut oil, and lima beans.
Initially launched for food service last year, Climax Blue is priced comparably to conventional blue cheese. Known for its blue-green veining and creamy, fudgy texture, it has been praised for being virtually indistinguishable from dairy cheese. Founder Oliver Zahn hinted at more upcoming retail launches for the product.
After its unveiling, Climax Blue received enthusiastic acclaim from chefs like Dominique Crenn, who called it “beyond imagination for a vegan cheese,” and Matthew Kenney, who stated it “represents what I have been waiting for after 20 years as a plant-based chef.” Following the product’s launch, Climax Foods partnered with The Bel Group to develop a new range of plant-based cheeses under brands such as Laughing Cow, Kiri, Boursin, Babybel, and Nurishh, with Bel also acquiring an equity stake in Climax Foods.
Climax Foods also revealed last year that it had identified the first plant-based ingredient capable of mimicking the performance of casein, the protein that allows dairy cheese to melt and stretch. Using data science and AI, the company developed a seed-based protein that could revolutionize vegan cheese.
