The 23-year-old is in his second year as a quarterback and shared that he first began a plant-based diet in college at Ohio State. He was home during the quarantine during his final year when his family decided to do a 28-day plant-based detox with his family and he quickly saw how positively his body responded. That’s when he knew this was a change he wanted to make for the long run. He has now become an advocate for the benefits of a plant-based diet and lifestyle.

In an interview with GQ, Fields talked about his focus during the off-season, how he transitioned to a plant-based diet, and his advice to anyone interested in making the change.

Fields said that he could tell a difference within just a few weeks of switching to plant-based. He noticed that it was easier to fight inflammation and his recovery time was shorter. He even said that his trainers were shocked at how quickly he recovered.

“It’s sort of like a superpower,” he said.

When asked if he misses any foods, he said that after seeing the differences in his body and recovery, it became second nature to him.

“Honestly, the new plant-based options they have out there do the trick when you’re craving a good burger every now and then.”

He said that he typically eats some avocado toast and works out. After that, he’ll have an acai bowl followed by varying lunches and dinners. He tries not to eat too late and sometimes will have his go-to sweets, Trü Frü chocolate strawberries or KIND plant-based ice cream bars.

His advice to anyone out there wanting to try cutting out meat is to “just go for it.”

“It was hard for me the first couple of weeks but after I get used to it, it was easy. Some people might have to slowly move to it, where they eat plant-based throughout the week and have their cheat meals during the weekend. Whatever way works for each person, that’s the best thing for them.”
