Colombian authorities have intercepted an attempt at wildlife trafficking, as a woman was apprehended at Bogotá airport with 130 poisonous frogs concealed in her luggage. The discovery, made on Monday, has once again highlighted the grim realities of illicit wildlife trade flourishing in the region.

The frogs, identified as Harlequin frogs or poison-dart frogs (Oophaga histrionica), were found tightly packed in small film canisters, visibly dehydrated and distressed, as per officials. The Brazilian woman, en route to São Paulo via Panama, claimed that the frogs were a gift from a local community in southern Colombia. However, this did not absolve her from the charges of wildlife trafficking.
Authorities emphasized the gravity of the situation, revealing that each of these amphibians could fetch up to $1,000 on the black market. The Bogotá Environment Secretary, Adriana Soto, underscored the severity of penalties associated with this crime, stating that fines for possession of these frogs could reach a staggering 56 million pesos ($14,300).
Harlequin frogs, named for their vibrant patterns, are diminutive creatures, measuring less than the size of a human thumb. Despite their small stature, they pack a potent defense mechanism – their skin glands secrete a highly toxic poison. Historically, indigenous communities utilized this poison to tip their hunting darts, harnessing its lethal potency to subdue prey.
However, the very uniqueness of these frogs has rendered them critically endangered. Their habitat spans humid forests along the Pacific coast from Ecuador to Colombia, making them a precious but vulnerable species. The perilous status of the Harlequin frogs has made them prime targets for wildlife traffickers for private collectors in international markets.
