Watch this adorable video of a baby Joey accidentally going into the wrong pouch!
This baby kangaroo named Jellybean is seen hopping around looking for his mom when he mistakingly tries to go into the pouch of another kangaroo! This kangaroo, mistaken for his mom, didn’t seem to mind and gently guided Jellybean in the right direction. The reaction of his mom is priceless!
At first sight, a kangaroo’s pouch may look like a simple pocket where the joey can rest. However, this is a common misconception since we usually only see it from the outside view. The pouch is way more complex than that. Believe it or not, it acts as a second womb, keeping the joey safe from harm.
According to Discover Wildlife, “After a gestation of up to 34 days, the jellybean-sized baby kangaroo makes the journey from the birth canal to the pouch by clambering up through its mother’s fur. Once safely in the pouch, the joey suckles solidly for just over two months.” When joeys are born, they are extremely small, underdeveloped, deaf, and blind. This makes them extremely vulnerable if left on their own, out in the wild.
Luckily, the pouch contains everything they need to grow strong and healthy! The pouch contains four nipples that produce different types of milk simultaneously. This is so a mother kangaroo can feed multiple joeys of different age groups at the same time!
“Another special feature about the kangaroo pouch is that it’s lined with sweat glands that release antimicrobial substances, which help protect the baby roos from harmful viruses, bacteria, and parasites.” A kangaroo’s pouch is the ultimate nursery for their baby.
At around six months, the joey is finally ready to start exploring the world on their own two feet! At this point, the joey is much more developed and will leave their mother’s pouch for short periods throughout the day. However, they will return when they need to rest and feed. It’s not until about ten months in that a joey is mature enough to leave their cozy home for good!
