The Kangaroo Sanctuary in Alice Springs takes orphaned kangaroos whose mothers have been killed and care for them, like Abigail, a very sweet and affectionate kangaroo they rescued. Chris ‘Brolga’ Barns and his wife run the sanctuary. In the video above, Barns can be seen encouraging a joey (baby kangaroo) named Bradley to hop around a bit.
Bradley only ever spent time in his mother’s pouch, but his mother was hit by a car and killed. Barns have since been carrying Bradley around in a pillowcase as a DIY pouch for the baby kangaroo. Bradley spends almost all his time in there, but Barns and his wife want him to hop around at least for a few minutes a day in the safety of their home to stretch and strengthen his legs. At 0:33, Bradley can be seen hopping back into the pillowcase. Watch until the end to see his sleepy face ready to nap in the ‘pouch’ again.
Unfortunately, millions of kangaroos are killed brutally every year by hunters, and many joeys are either left orphaned like Bradley or are also killed.
