VIral Instagram Video Shows What’s Hiding Behind Aluminum Soft Drink Cans

Instagram influencer and wellness coach Adithya Nataraj has shed light on a hidden aspect of everyday beverage consumption that many may not be aware of. Through a video shared on social media, Nataraj unveils the secret plastic coating concealed within steel and aluminium cans, a practice existing for decades but often overlooked by consumers.

In the video, Nataraj demonstrates the process by removing the outer paint of a Coke can and submerging it in a beaker filled with heavy-duty drain cleaner. Within moments, the can dissolves entirely, leaving behind a transparent plastic coating.

Explaining the science behind this phenomenon, Nataraj highlights that soft drink cans are typically made from an aluminum alloy, internally coated with plastic to protect the metal from corrosion caused by acidic beverages. However, when exposed to substances like sodium hydroxide (NaOH), commonly found in drain cleaners, the aluminum reacts, dissolving while leaving the plastic coating intact.

Nataraj’s video serves as a wake-up call, drawing attention not only to the presence of microplastics but also to potential toxic substances leaching from the container into the drink. Beyond the well-known health concerns associated with sugary beverages, this revelation adds another layer of consideration for consumers.

While scientists and industry insiders have long been aware of this practice, it remains largely unknown to the public. As awareness grows, consumers may rethink their choices, opting for alternatives that minimize exposure to potentially harmful substances.
