Despite their many positive attributes, senior dogs are often overlooked in animal shelters and rescues. This can lead to prolonged stays, and difficulty finding forever homes. For one senior rescue dog named Emma, this proved to be the case. After a life of neglect, Emma was taken into the care of a shelter. She was then placed in several foster homes.
Eventually, Emma ended up finding her perfect forever home with Adrian Lott and Spencer Erikson. These two humans run the Instagram page @adoptolddogs, where they share the virtues of senior pups. They have shared several videos of Emma, including one where the senior rescue dog seems to finally realize that she is safe with her new humans.
In the video, Emma can be seen shaking violently as text overlay on the screen reads, “Emma was 14 when we adopted her. She was so overwhelmed at first. I can’t imagine being a tiny geriatric dog and finding yourself in a shelter, then a couple of foster homes. But I think in this moment, she chose me as her forever human”. Indeed, when her person begins to stroke her, the senior rescue dog visibly calms down.
Although Emma ended up with a happily ever after, not all shelter dogs are so lucky. Sadly, rising rates of owner surrender and abandonment have led to crowding and overpopulation issues at shelters around the world. Emma’s story is an important reminder of the difference that adopting a rescue dog can make.
