Victory! New Zealand Bans Testing Psychoactive Drugs on Animals

Over the past 18 months, Animal rights organizations across New Zealand have worked to ban the testing of “legal high” drugs – synthetic marijuana – on animals. New Zealand passed a bill last year legalizing these designer drugs, and took to testing these recreational drugs on animals, in the same manner that pharmaceuticals are tested.

Perhaps, the people who mandated the testing of these drugs on animals must have been doing some “testing” themselves…As Humane Society International points out, testing recreational drugs on animals is not only cruel and unnecessary but it stands on very shaky moral ground. It’s a little like force feeding a rabbit beer to determine whether blood-alcohol limits for driving should be revised…doesn’t make much sense.

Luckily, since the ban on legal psychoactive drugs has passed in New Zealand, all tests of the drug on animals will end. Not only that, but New Zealand Parliament has also agreed to nullify the test results so they cannot be used to attest to the safety of psychoactive substances in humans.

As Humane Society International so beautifully states this is “not just a victory for animal welfare but for modern science, too[!]”
