Venezuela may become the first nation in modern history to lose all its glaciers, as climate scientists have downgraded its last one, Humboldt, to an ice field. This development underscores the severe impacts of Climate change on the world’s cryosphere.

The International Cryosphere Climate Initiative (ICCI) announced that Humboldt, located in the Andes, no longer meets the criteria to be classified as a glacier due to its significant shrinkage. Over the past century, Venezuela has lost at least six glaciers, leaving Humboldt as the sole survivor until now.
Rising global temperatures, driven by Climate change, are accelerating ice loss worldwide, contributing to rising sea levels. Dr. Caroline Clason, a glaciologist at Durham University, highlighted that Humboldt has had minimal ice cover since the 2000s and no new ice has been added, leading to its reclassification.
Research from the University of Los Andes in Colombia revealed that the glacier shrank from 450 hectares to just two by March. Ecologist Luis Daniel Llambi noted that it has now shrunk even further. According to the US Geological Survey, a commonly accepted minimum size for a glacier is around 10 hectares. However, the Humboldt ice mass no longer meets this threshold.
Glaciologists Dr. James Kirkham and Dr. Miriam Jackson explained that for a body of ice to be considered a glacier, it must deform under its own weight. They acknowledged that accessing Humboldt for measurements has been challenging, possibly delaying the recognition of its current status.
Despite efforts by the Venezuelan government to preserve the remaining ice using a thermal blanket, local climate scientists criticized the move, warning it could introduce plastic contaminants into the environment.
The loss of Humboldt marks a significant environmental milestone, with implications for local water supplies and regional climate patterns. According to Professor Mark Maslin from University College London, once glaciers are gone, their loss is irreversible due to the lack of ice to reflect sunlight and maintain cooler temperatures.
As Global warming progresses, other nations with equatorial glaciers, such as Indonesia, Mexico, and Slovenia, are also at risk of becoming glacier-free. The latest projections indicate that between 20% and 80% of glaciers worldwide could disappear by 2100, depending on future carbon emissions.
Reducing CO2 emissions remains critical to preserving remaining glaciers and ensuring the stability of water supplies and ecosystems that depend on them.
