@gopharitravels Being open to new experiences makes life so colourful 💙 #earthday #earthmonth Spending a sunshiny afternoon out in Scarborough on a foraging excursion with @Roushanna Gray was a soul-refreshing break from the city. Even better was doing it together as creators who share a love for the outdoors 🫶🏾 🌊 Have you gone foraging along the beach? Foraging along the beach means searching the coastline for naturally-existing food such as seaweed and shellfish. 🌊 There’s always something new and fascinating to learn about the magic of the ocean. 🌊 Here’s an interesting fact: There are over 800 species of seaweed in South Africa and only 1 is not edible 🙌🏾 #zerowaste #sustainability #ecofriendly #ecotravel #travel #gophari #ecohacks #levelupafrica #indigenousknowledge #ecofriendly #seaweed #mussels #traveltok #coastalforaging #coastalforage #foraging #tiktoktravel #nature #outdoortravel
South Africa is known for its beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters, and rich biodiversity. It’s no wonder that this country is home to a wide range of seaweed species that grow along its coastline. Out in Scarborough Western Cape, there is only one variety of seaweed that’s not edible out of the 800 species in South Africa. These varieties all bring unique flavors and textures, and are featured in beautiful dishes all over the world.
Some of the common types of edible seaweed that are found in South Africa include nori, kelp, dulse and wakame. Wakame is a dark blue, almost black seaweed, rich in protein, magnesium, chlorophyll, iron, calcium, and zinc, and served in soups and salads. Dulse is a green and slightly purple seaweed, very light in taste, and perfect for soups, stews, and on salads. Nori is a type of seaweed that is commonly used in sushi. It is a thin, dark green seaweed that has a slightly sweet, nutty flavor. Kelp is one of the most common types of seaweed that is found in South Africa and is used in a variety of soups, stews, and salads.
Seaweed provides the body with magnesium, zinc, Vitamin B12, biotin, and iron, alkalizes the blood, increases hair and nail growth, clears the skin and enhances eyesight, reduces anxiety and enhances mental focus, and just one gram of seaweed provides your entire day’s worth of iodine, a critical mineral for the thyroid.
It’s amazing what nature has to offer, and South Africa’s edible seaweed is a delicious example!
