In a surprising move that could spark a trend across the U.S., Utah is set to become the first state to ban the use of fluoride in public water systems. According to a report by Fortune’s Chris Morris, the bill has passed and Republican Governor Spencer Cox has confirmed he will sign it, despite saying it’s not a bill he feels strongly about.
“It’s not a bill I felt strongly about; it’s not a bill I care that much about, but it’s a bill I will sign,” Cox told ABC4 Utah. The law is expected to take effect in early May, impacting the more than 365,000 residents currently receiving fluoridated water in the state.
The move comes months after Robert F. Kennedy Jr. claimed that former President Donald Trump would also push to remove fluoride from drinking water. Kennedy and other opponents argue that fluoride is linked to neurodevelopmental issues, though these claims are hotly contested.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention maintains that fluoridating water is safe and has been one of the top 10 public-health achievements of the 20th century. Critics of the Utah bill point to Canadian cities like Calgary and Windsor, where fluoride bans were reversed after tooth decay rates climbed.
Still, Utah’s action may signal a shift. States like Montana, North Dakota, and Tennessee have similar fluoride ban bills underway, and this could open the door to more sweeping changes in how we treat public water.
If we’re serious about protecting public health, the environment, and animal well-being, it’s time we rethink what goes into our water—and into our bodies. Clean water is a right, and we must demand transparency and plant-based, non-toxic solutions for a more sustainable future. Support water Conservation, reduce harmful additives, and choose natural personal care products whenever possible.
