Britain keeps hearing that net zero is too expensive. However, the new evidence points the other way. According to the Climate Change Committee’s supplementary analysis of the Seventh Carbon Budget, the path to net zero by 2050 would cost less than one major fossil fuel crisis while also delivering major gains for the economy, public health, and the environment.

That matters right now because families are once again being hit by energy volatility. Oil and gas prices can surge fast when war, supply disruptions, or political instability rattle global markets. By contrast, clean domestic power offers something fossil fuels rarely do, which is greater stability. The CCC found that reaching net zero would cost about £4 billion a year, with total costs by 2050 roughly in line with the damage already caused by recent fossil fuel price shocks.

There is also a bigger story here. Moving away from fossil fuels means more renewable electricity, more electric vehicles, and more efficient homes through measures like heat pumps and insulation. In practice, that could mean warmer homes, cleaner air, and healthier diets with less red meat. Those changes would not only cut emissions but could also reduce pressure on the NHS and save people money over time.

Just as important, the committee found that every pound invested in the transition could return between two and four pounds in benefits. That is not a fringe environmental argument. It is a practical case for energy security, lower long term costs, and a safer future on this planet.

The politics around net zero may stay noisy, but the economics are getting clearer. A cleaner system looks cheaper, safer, and far less risky than staying hooked on fossil fuels. Support clean energy, protect Earth, and choose a more plant based future.
