President Donald Trump says the United States will withdraw from the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate change. The 1992 pact is the main forum where nearly every country meets to address rising heat and Pollution. According to Sara Schonhardt at POLITICO, the White House says these bodies push radical climate policies that clash with U.S. interests. If the withdrawal goes through, the United States would be the only nation to ever leave the UNFCCC. That is a big deal because the treaty underpins the Paris Agreement and annual climate talks.
The administration is also leaving the Paris Agreement again. That exit is set to take effect later this month. Meanwhile, scientists warn the hottest years on record keep stacking up. Extreme weather is also getting more expensive and deadly. So when governments slow down on climate, people can end up breathing dirtier air and facing worse health outcomes. A weaker global response can also harm the environment, including forests and coasts that protect communities. Those same systems Support wildlife and help stabilize rainfall and food supplies.
Supporters of the treaty say the U.S. loses influence over rules that guide clean energy investment. They also warn American families could miss out on jobs tied to the clean energy shift. Legal experts note the Senate ratified the UNFCCC in 1992, which could complicate reentry later. Under the treaty’s terms, the withdrawal takes effect one year after the U.S. files its notice with the United Nations.
Still, states, cities, and companies can keep pushing climate action at home. You can help too by choosing more plant based meals and backing leaders who protect clean air and water. Keep showing up for the planet and for animals, and keep pushing for a safer future.
