The Trump administration has cancelled what would have been one of the largest solar projects on the planet—marking at least the fourth major strike against clean energy since his return to office in 2025. According to The Guardian, the Esmeralda 7 project in Nevada, which would have generated enough electricity to power nearly 2 million homes, has had its environmental review terminated by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM).

Planned to span 185 square miles—nearly the size of Las Vegas—the project included seven interconnected solar installations by companies like NextEra Energy, Invenergy, and Leeward Renewable Energy. Initially greenlit under President Biden, the initiative remained in limbo after Trump re-entered the White House. Now, the BLM has officially changed its status, halting the process indefinitely.

This is part of a clear pattern. On his first day back in office, Trump issued an executive order pausing all new renewable energy authorizations on federal land and water. In February, he appointed Kathleen Sgamma—an oil lobbyist—to lead the BLM, which manages one-tenth of the land in the U.S. Then in July, another order handed Interior Secretary Doug Burgum full veto power over renewable projects, further slowing progress. And in August, Trump announced outright: “We will not approve wind or farmer-destroying Solar.”

While the rest of the world accelerates the clean energy transition to protect the planet, the U.S. risks falling behind. Solar power is one of the most scalable, climate-friendly sources of electricity we have. Scrapping projects like Esmeralda 7 doesn’t just stall progress—it deepens our reliance on polluting fossil fuels, harming public health and the environment.

This latest move isn’t about strategy—it’s about sabotage. And it comes at a time when we need bold action, not backpedaling.

Now more than ever, we must Support policies and lifestyles that protect the Earth, our health, and future generations—choose renewables, go plant-based, and stay informed.
