You Won’t Believe the Before/After Photos of This Dog Found With 400 Porcupine Quills in His Body

Author Bio

I am a writer and illustrator living in Poland.

Wishbone is a rescue dog with a very unusual story. He was found on out in the Sterling truck trails – and his body was covered with hundreds of porcupine quills. The poor coonhound even had quills on the inside of his mouth. Terribly skinny and frail, the animal was in a bad place – but now, he looks completely different. And he is ready to find his forever home!

After a kind person brought him to Arenac County Animal Control, Wishbone was taken to the veterinarian who pulled all the quills out of his body. The painful quills must have made it difficult for the dog to eat – when he was found, Wishbone weighed only around 40 pounds, that is at least 20 pounds less than coonhounds his age.

It was not certain how, where, or when the dog tangled with the porcupine, but the results of the encounter were more than clear – poor Wishbone had about 400 quills lodged in his face, chest, and front legs.

Once the painful needles were gone, the dog was immediately more comfortable and he was put on medication and a new special feeding program. Because of how emaciated he was, Wishbone could only get many small meals throughout the day instead of a couple of big ones. Still exhausted and very weak, the pup was finally safe and able to rest.

Around a month later, Wishbone’s caretakers had a very good update to make. The dog gained weight wonderfully and now weighs 51.7 lbs! His condition improved greatly and the last stubborn quills stuck along his rib cage and under his inner leg were surgically removed. “Wishbone is a new and improved dog thanks to all of the Support,” his carers wrote, thanking everyone for all the donations and kindness offered to the pup.

The support and love Wishbone was shown is truly overwhelming. Hannah Senske, one of the hikers who found the dog, started a GoFundMe campaign to raise the money needed to cover Wishbone’s medical expenses. The goal was set as 1,000 dollars – but people eager to help the dog managed to raise as much as 2,310 dollars!

Wishbone is now recovered, strong, and more than ready for his forever home and someone who will love him unconditionally. Arenac County Animal Control is taking applications for the adoption of the beautiful pup – if you are interested in adopting Wishbone, you can find the application here.
