Tragic Plane Crash Claims Life of Pilot and Rescue Dog

Mooney M20J

A small plane transporting rescue dogs to an animal shelter crashed in the snowy Catskill Mountains, killing the pilot and one of the dogs onboard. The tragic incident occurred Sunday evening near Windham, New York, about 35 miles southwest of Albany.

Seuk Kim, a 49-year-old pilot from Springfield, Virginia, was flying from Maryland to Albany when the crash happened. Authorities believe Kim died upon impact. He was volunteering with a nonprofit organization that relies on pilots to transport rescue animals from overcrowded shelters to safer locations.

The crash also claimed the life of one rescue dog. However, two dogs survived. Whiskey, a Labrador-mix puppy with broken bones, and Pluto, an 18-month-old Yorkie terrier mix who escaped with minor injuries. Whiskey was later taken to a veterinary hospital in Connecticut.

Greene County Sheriff Peter Kusminsky described the challenges of the search effort. Rescuers found the wreckage late Sunday in a remote, snow-covered area after Kim reported turbulence and sought to adjust the plane’s altitude before the crash.

Tributes have poured in for Kim, who was praised for his dedication to rescuing animals. Maggie Pryor, director of the Animal Shelter of Schoharie County, credited him with saving the lives of hundreds of animals over the years.

Nonprofit organizations and fellow rescuers shared their gratitude for Kim’s efforts, including Forever Changed Animal Rescue, which highlighted his work as part of the “Pilots N Paws” program.

The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
