Super-athlete Tom Brady recently revealed that his new dog is actually a clone of the family’s beloved pet who died in 2023. According to the announcement, Brady worked with bioscience firm Colossal Biosciences (in which he is also an investor) and its acquisition of Viagen Pets & Equine to replicate his late dog through a simple blood draw and a few months of cloning technology.
On the surface, this might look like a feel-good second chance for a grieving pet owner. But from the standpoint of animal welfare, environmental values and a plant-based lifestyle that honours all animal lives, the story raises caution flags. The cloning company also tracks endangered species projects and “de-extinction” efforts. That might sound cutting-edge, but critics point out that the technology remains fraught with serious concerns. For example, cloning frequently involves high failure rates, suffering of surrogate animals and ethical questions about treating pets as replicable objects rather than unique lives.
From an earth– and animal-friendly perspective, the headline to take away is this: when humans turn to cloning rather than adoption or rescue, we risk sidelining existing animals who need homes and increasing the demand for technologies that sidestep animal welfare. As one major animal-welfare organisation states, cloning never truly reproduces the original pet’s character, and the process often leaves animals vulnerable to harm.
For readers dedicated to a plant-based lifestyle and protecting our environment, the message is clear: While technology may tempt us with second chances, the best way to honour animal lives is to Support adoption, compassionate care and biodiversity, not commodification.
If you care about animals, the earth and your own health, lean into rescue rather than replication—choose kindness over cloning.
