The Arctic may soon become the world’s clean energy powerhouse. According to a recent piece by Edwin O. titled It could be more than all the gas on Earth — Energy found under the Arctic, the frigid polar region is sitting on hydrogen energy potential greater than all known global gas reserves. But only a fraction of this vast resource is currently in use.

At the 2025 Arctic Circle Assembly in Reykjavik, leaders and scientists gathered to discuss how the Arctic could pivot from fossil fuels to hydrogen. Hydrogen, when produced using renewable electricity through electrolysis, emits no greenhouse gases—offering a clean alternative to conventional energy. Researchers emphasized the need for community-led initiatives, with Dr. Michael Ross from the Yukon Research Centre advocating for collaboration with Arctic residents to ensure they benefit from this transition.

Despite its promise, the Arctic’s hydrogen revolution faces real challenges. Infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage, and distribution is expensive and not suited to harsh polar conditions. Klaus Skytte, CEO of Nordic Energy Research, pointed out that only 0.2% of the region’s hydrogen capacity is currently operational. Nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions during hydrogen combustion and the enormous water requirements for electrolysis pose additional environmental concerns.

Groups like Nordic Hydrogen Valleys are working on building out hydrogen networks across the region. With proper investment, innovation, and policy Support, the Arctic could shift from being a symbol of environmental fragility to a global beacon of clean energy progress.

If we’re serious about stopping the climate crisis, now’s the time to Support clean, renewable alternatives. Keep fossil fuels in the ground, advocate for green tech investment, and stand with Indigenous and local communities at the forefront of this energy transition. Every step toward clean hydrogen is a step away from planetary collapse.
