Although rhinos appear to be strong, even intimidating, creatures, they are on the verge of facing near extinction. Sadly, the cause of the loss of the rhino population is none other than human greed.
Rhinos are targeted for their horns which are believed to have potent healing properties in Traditional Asian Medicine. The reality, however, is that rhino horns are composed of keratin – the same material as our own hair and nails – meaning there is no real evidence that consuming rhino horn is any more beneficial than chewing your nails. Yet, the high price for this commodity continues to drive poachers to kill these animals. It is estimated that three rhinos are killed every day for their horns and if this rate does not decrease, many species will be extinct within our lifetimes.
Hope, the South African white rhino featured in this video, was targeted by poachers for her horn. The cruel poachers hacked off her horn and left with a giant open wound. Her chances of survival were next to none, however, she was found by Saving the Survivors, a team of veterinary experts, just in time.
Hope has been given a life-saving plate that will act as bandage for her wound until it heals. While it is heartbreaking to see her suffer from the pain of the procedure to implant the plate, it is comforting to know that she will, in time, heal and return to her full strength.
While Hope’s story has a happy ending, many others do not. To help raise awareness for this struggle species, share this video with everyone you know. No animal should have to face such pain and suffering for the sake of human greed.
