While there is still plenty of controversy surrounding the use of drones, particularly for war and surveillance purposes, they are increasingly becoming more accepted by wildlife watchers and conservationists around the world.

Indeed, drones may actually be the future of whale and dolphin watching as they frequently capture stunning footage of our ocean neighbors that we’d rarely get the chance to witness otherwise unless we take our own wildlife watching trip (and no, captivity is not a viable option).

Recently, an utterly breathtaking drone-captured video of a massive mega-pod dolphin stampede was released by whale watching company Capt. Dave’s Dolphin and Whale Safari in Dana Point, Calif as taken by Captain Dave Anderson himself.

“This is the most beautiful and compelling five minute video I have ever put together. I learned so much about these whales and dolphins from this drone footage that it feels like I have entered a new dimension! I have not been this excited about a new technology since we built our underwater viewing pods on our whale watching boat. Drones are going to change how we view the animal world,” said Capt. Dave, who is also the founding member of Orange County’s first whale disentanglement group and the author award-winning book, “Lily, A Gray Whale’s Odyssey.”

Check out his amazing footage of a rare-to-see dolphin stampede in the video below, and learn more about how he did it by reading the YouTube video description.
