Politicians Want to Impose Laws That Override Foie Gras and Horse Meat Ban – Let’s Act Now!

Animal advocates have tirelessly fought for many decades to change laws pertaining to animal welfare. It is a long, uphill battle plagued by corruption from the opposition and a resistance to change from figures in leadership roles. However, with much persistence, well-documented facts, and logical arguments, animal advocates have made great advancements in the progress of animal welfare and have helped change laws on how animals are treated.

However, as a petition on Care2 written by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) explains, there are some politicians, namely Rep. Steve King from Iowa and Rep. James Sensenbrenner from Wisconsin, who are trying to revert back in time and pass legislation, known as the “States’ Rights Elimination Acts,” that permit atrocious practices of animal cruelty and put the health of both animals and humans at risk.

California currently has a ban on the sale of foie gras, which is inhumanely created by force-feeding ducks with tubes down their throats, causing enlarged, diseased livers. These new “States’ Rights Elimination Acts” could force California to allow the sale of foie gras. Illinois and other states have a ban on the sale of horse meat, but these acts could reverse this as well. Georgia and other states could be forced to allow the sale of dog meat, and several states’ restrictions on the sale of animals from puppy mills could be taken away. And Massachusetts could be forced to allow the sale of eggs from factory farm chickens who are prone to Salmonella and other dangerous bacteria.

There have been great strides in the development of Animal rights, and it is unbelievable there are people who adamantly want to infringe on states’ rights and force them to revert back in time and permit animal cruelty. If you are outraged by this new proposed legislation, please take a moment to sign the petition addressed to your U.S. Representatives and Senators and tell them to take a stance against cruelty, stand up for states’ rights, and halt these acts from becoming laws.
