Tusuja, the baby elephant, is the newest arrival at the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT). Although he is positively adorable and seems extremely happy in the care of the sanctuary, his story begins with tragedy.
Tusuja was found in a wide open field with no herd or parents in sight. A baby elephant without a herd is extremely vulnerable to predators and starvation. After the DSWT was alerted of the calf, they set out to help. As night was approaching, the team made the decision to rescue him immediately instead of waiting until the next day.
Upon examination, they found Tusuja was in worse condition than initially thought. He had a bloated stomach, sunken cheeks, and was riddled with intestinal parasites. Luckily DSWT vets were armed and ready with the skills and tools they needed to get Tusuja happy and well in no time!
A few months later and Tusuja is thriving in the company of his other rescued orphan friends and growing stronger every day. DSWT hopes that in time, he will be able to get released back to the wild and lead the life he was always meant to.
The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust has earned our respect and admiration through their unwavering dedication to caring for orphaned and abused elephants. To learn more about this incredible organization, visit their website, here.
