When you go to a pet store and see puppies for sale, you see the precious face of an excited dog looking back at you. What you don’t see however, is the terrible conditions that dogs and hundreds of others had to endure before they came to be in that store. The sad truth is that many dogs sold commercially come from puppy mills. Puppy mills are large scale breeding facilities where dogs are treated like breeding machines.

Sapphire, the dog featured in this video, is a puppy mill survivor. This little Keeshond was rescued from the nation’s largest Keeshond breeding facility in the United States. The Keeshond is a breed that is known for its big fluffy fur, however, Sapphire was discovered with an extreme case of mange and bacterial infections all over her body. As you can see in the video, her fluffy fur had been reduced to patchy irritated skin as the result of her neglect. Sapphire was kept in a pen with 30 other dogs and was covered with bites and scratches.

Luckily, Sapphire, along with 60 other dogs, have been rescued from the facility. Watch as Sapphire literally transforms from a sickly, scared little dog into a playful, happy puppy. Sapphire is one of the lucky dogs that managed to escape the horrors of living in a puppy mill, but there are still many others currently suffering. You can help by choosing to adopt a rescued pet rather than purchasing an animal from a shop. There are millions of amazing dogs waiting for a forever home in shelters, and when you know the cruelty you’re supporting when you purchase a dog from a store: the choice is simple!
