Rescue workers in San Bernardino County successfully saved 17 large farm animals from a muddy trap after a heavy storm hit the area. The rescue team, composed of members from the San Bernardino County Animal Care, the San Bernardino County Fire Department’s large animal rescue team, the Urban Search & Rescue team, and heavy equipment units, used ropes, animal sleds, and skid steers to pull the cows, bulls, and horses from the thick mud. The rescue operation, which took five hours to complete, was documented in a video posted on Twitter by the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District.

The video shows more than a dozen rescue workers struggling to pull a black cow out of the mud while being met with agitated mooing. After rescuing the first six animals, the rescue team had to clear a path with a skid steer to access the additional 11 animals that were still trapped. By Wednesday evening, all the animals had been successfully rescued and transported to the Devore Animal Shelter in San Bernardino for evaluation by a veterinarian.

The rescue team’s efforts are commendable, but it is essential to acknowledge that the heavy storm that caused the mud trap and put the farm animals in danger is also a product of Climate change. With extreme weather events becoming more frequent due to Climate change, it is not only the animals on farms that are at risk but also our communities.

The impact of Climate change on animal agriculture is significant, as it is a major source of greenhouse gas emissions. The meat industry is responsible for more than 14% of global emissions, making it one of the leading causes of Climate change. However, there are ways we can reduce the industry’s impact on the environment, such as cutting back on meat consumption, supporting regenerative farming practices, and choosing grass-fed, pasture-raised animal products.

We can also take steps to address Climate change by supporting policies that promote renewable energy and decrease reliance on fossil fuels, reducing our own carbon footprint by driving less and using energy-efficient appliances, and advocating for climate action in our communities and governments.

The successful rescue of 17 large farm animals from a muddy trap is a testament to the resilience and dedication of rescue workers. However, it is also a reminder of the impact of Climate change on animal agriculture and the urgent need for climate action. We must take steps to reduce the industry’s impact on the environment and Support policies that address Climate change. Let’s do our part to protect our planet and the animals that inhabit it.
