Being a new mom is a tough job — especially in the wild. Kitty, the mother elephant in the video, was separated from her herd when she stopped to give birth to her first calf. Left all alone, the inexperienced mother was subject to the perils of the wild, rendered entirely helpless when her calf fell into a watering hole! When Katitio Sayialel, the Field Operations Manager and Researcher at the Amboseli Trust For Elephants, received a call about the elephant, however, she stepped in to help.
Although she tried to free her baby from the water, Kitty lacked experience in the ways of motherhood. Elephants form strong bonds with their herd mates and look out for each other, but without the support of her family, it was impossible for Kitty to save her baby. It was up to the Amboseli Trust For Elephants rescue team to save the day.
Thanks to their patience and diligence, the team managed to get Kitty and her calf to an area near the herd to reunite them. They say it takes a village to raise a child, and this is certainly true for elephants as well!

I wonder why the herd would leave her to give birth alone?
