Rare Black Iceberg Spotted Near Canada Sparks Global Curiosity

A rare black iceberg recently stunned a fisherman off the coast of Canada—and the internet. Hallur Antoniussen, aboard the trawler Saputi in the Labrador Sea, spotted the dark, diamond-shaped iceberg floating eerily among the usual white chunks of sea ice. Sharing the footage online, Antoniussen’s video quickly went viral due to the iceberg’s dramatic and almost otherworldly appearance.

While most icebergs appear white due to tiny air bubbles that scatter light, older ice becomes denser, allowing light to pass through more easily. This process often makes older icebergs appear blue. But sometimes, other materials—like dirt, iron, or volcanic ash—can mix with the ice, creating striking shades of green, grey, or even black.

According to Nature and glaciologist Lev Tarasov of Memorial University in Canada, one possible explanation is that this black iceberg originated from a glacier that ground up rock and soil as it moved toward the ocean. Over centuries—possibly even 100,000 years—this debris became embedded in the ice. Other theories suggest soot from volcanic eruptions or meteorite dust could be to blame for the iceberg’s mysterious coloring.

Because these icebergs are so rare and fleeting, it’s likely we’ll never know for sure. Unless, of course, scientists happen to be nearby the next time one appears—and that’s a big if.

Still, this eerie black berg is a powerful reminder of nature’s unpredictability and beauty. If we want future generations to marvel at such rare wonders, we need to protect polar habitats, fight fossil-fuel-driven climate change, and embrace more sustainable, plant-based lifestyles that help cool our warming world.
