A recent investigation has raised alarms about over-the-counter protein powders, revealing significant levels of lead and cadmium in some products. According to the Clean Label Project, plant-based, organic, and chocolate-flavored protein powders showed the highest contamination levels. Jaclyn Bowen, the nonprofit’s executive director, noted that organic powders, on average, contained three times more lead and double the cadmium levels compared to their non-organic counterparts.
Plant-based powders made from ingredients like soy, rice, and peas were found to have three times more lead than whey-based powders. Bowen explained that plants naturally absorb heavy metals from soil, but contamination can worsen in areas affected by mining, industrial waste, or certain fertilizers. Chocolate-flavored products were particularly concerning, with lead levels four times higher and cadmium levels up to 110 times greater than vanilla options.
Despite these findings, there was positive news about bisphenol contamination. The study found that only 2% of the 160 protein powders tested contained BPA or BPS, a dramatic improvement compared to 2018, when 55% of products tested positive.
While 47% of the protein powders tested exceeded California’s Proposition 65 guidelines for lead, Bowen emphasized that consumers don’t need to avoid these products entirely. Instead, she advised selecting products carefully. For those on a plant-based diet, pea protein powders appeared to have the lowest heavy metal levels.
Bowen encouraged consumers to hold manufacturers accountable by asking about contaminant levels. “The topic of heavy metals isn’t going away,” she said.
