VeganBurg is the world’s first 100 percent plant-based burger joint serving up American favorites without the cruelty, cholesterol, or a guilty conscience. Founded in 2010 in Singapore, they have since expanded to San Francisco, which has been very successful. They make 95 percent of their items from scratch, food is made-to-order, GMO-free, and local and organic as much as possible, and they use compostable packaging, recycled wood pallets, and energy efficient appliances. And the food gets rave reviews, earning the restaurant the title of Paul McCartney’s Meat Free Monday Favorite Fast Food Joint! And now this awesome restaurant is set to open 300 more locations in California and is going global with both domestic and international franchise opportunities!

VeganBurg has a big focus on the California market, seeing it as a hotspot for the plant-based movement. Alex Tan, VeganBurg’s CEO explained, “Southern California has been on the radar since conception, with an established vegan and cosmopolitan culture and their hunger for emerging sustainable brands. We anticipate this to be a booming market for us. We have already received a warm welcome from our San Francisco outlet customers and anticipate further expansion throughout the state. People have been waiting for so long for us to roll out franchising. The wait is finally over!”

They also see Indonesia as a potentially successful market, with Tan stating the reasons for expansion in the region as such: “We made the concept work in Asia — specifically in Singapore, then we put it to the test in San Francisco and the result was exponential! Expanding into the rest of South East Asia was a natural fit based on the region’s love for sustainability and the desire for a more plant-based dining experience.”

VeganBurg has an environmental conservation goal with their plant-based mission being to “inspire and excite the world to choose a plant-based diet as a means of planet restoration.”

Tan is quoted on the company’s website: “Let’s face it, the fast food system will continue to be a big chunk of our lives. We cannot change the system, but we can change what goes into it. Together, we can fight climate change and start a food revolution. Let’s change the world, one burger at a time.”

VeganBurg is absolutely right to draw the connection between the environment and our food choices. Animal agriculture contributes greatly to deforestation, creates massive pollution, is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the entire transportation sector combined, and a recent study showed the industry is more harmful to the planet than fossil fuel extractors like Exxon Mobil and Shell! We love seeing plant-based businesses succeed and expand as they help shape a better food system that benefits the environment, our health, and of course, animal welfare.
