The Phoenix Zoo is facing widespread backlash following reports that it plans to euthanize Indu, a 59-year-old Asian elephant who has lived alone for years, and then dismember her body to remove it from the zoo grounds. According to In Defense of Animals, an anonymous tip revealed the disturbing plan, sparking immediate outrage among animal advocates.

Indu has been alone since her companions Reba and Sheena passed away. Her enclosure is small, lacks meaningful enrichment, has no deep water for bathing, and offers minimal protection from Arizona’s harsh sun. These conditions recently earned the Phoenix Zoo a spot on In Defense of Animals’ 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants, a list highlighting facilities with a record of neglect toward these intelligent and social animals.

Despite over 22,000 people signing a petition calling for Indu’s transfer to a sanctuary, the zoo has declined to act. Instead, it has announced plans to shut down its elephant exhibit — but only after Indu dies.

“This isn’t just about one elephant — it’s about the way we treat sentient beings,” said Courtney Scott, Elephant Consultant for In Defense of Animals. “Indu still has time left. She deserves grass under her feet and the company of her own kind.”

Watch Indu’s heartbreaking stereotypical behavior, often a sign of stress and trauma in captive elephants. Then ask yourself: is this the best we can do?

If you believe Indu deserves a better life, now is the time to act. Tell the Phoenix Zoo to stop its plans and send her to a legitimate sanctuary where she can finally live in peace. Share her story, speak up for animals, and choose compassion every day — from the products you buy to the food on your plate.
