A city in Germany has adopted a more humane approach to caring for unhoused people. Ulm is testing out sleeping pods for people that do not have access to overnight shelter. These pods will give them warmth and protection from the brutal winter weather. They have each been fitted with safety systems to measure carbon dioxide and temperature, and also have lighting, solar power, and ventilation systems. The pods have enough room to store their belongings as well as space for a pet!
The best part of Ulm’s approach is that in addition to the protection from the cold, when a pod is activated, a social worker comes to visit in the morning to check in on the person and ensure that they are safe and doing okay. This approach of supporting unhoused populations with care and social Support, rather than criminalization is not only more compassionate, but also more effective!

Salt Lake City has a large number of unhoused people and a pattern of treating unhoused people inhumanely. Not too long ago, Salt Lake City had been asked to consider its ethical treatment of populations without shelter. Since then, local officials have not taken any action to fully Support the needs of the houseless community. On top of that, police have also violently destroyed encampments throughout the city, even in the middle of a pandemic. But the example of Ulm shows there is another, more humane way to approach and care for unhoused people.
It is time we bring this model to American cities. Rather than criminalizing people for poverty, Salt Lake City should take a compassionate approach and implement a program like this one in Ulm. Sign this petition to demand that Salt Lake City adopt this model of Support and care for unhoused people!
