Petition: Tell Congress to Pass Affordable Housing Legislation

Housing costs are at an all-time high, putting immense financial stress on families throughout the country. Research has repeatedly found that every single state in the country lacks decent affordable housing. In 2017, nearly half of renter households spent more than 30 percent of their income on rent, says Brookings. As a result, families are left with less to cover the costs of food, healthcare, transportation, and other necessities.

Another study revealed that “As of 2017, 88% of households with a household income less than $20,000 are housing-cost burdened.” On top of that, predatory companies like Zillow are buying up starter homes and immediately ramping up the prices to make a profit. Housing is a human right, and yet the overwhelming majority of Americans are struggling to make rent or mortgage payments.

Affordable housing is important to families all over the country as it fulfills a basic human need for shelter.
