Every day, toxic waste from the United States is crossing the border into Mexico, bringing illness and suffering to families living near processing plants. In Monterrey, residents are forced to endure the dangerous fallout from a factory that releases a horrifying mix of pollutants, including lead, arsenic, cadmium, and other hazardous materials.
We need your voice to demand an end to this reckless exportation of Pollution!
This tragedy is fueled by U.S. steel manufacturers that ship hazardous steel dust to Mexico to avoid the costs of safe disposal. This toxic dust ends up at a plant owned by Zinc Nacional, which profits from extracting valuable zinc but leaves local communities to deal with the deadly emissions. Families, including vulnerable children, are left to suffer the dire consequences.
Recent testing in northern Mexico revealed lead levels 60 times higher than what U.S. agencies consider dangerous. Lead is a neurotoxin that harms the brain and nervous system. In nearby homes, window sills are coated with lead levels 630 times above U.S. safety standards. Cadmium and arsenic were also found at alarming levels that can lead to cancer and lifelong health issues.
This crisis is not just a tragedy; it’s an injustice. While the United States has stringent protections against such Pollution on its own soil, it allows steel companies to export their toxic waste to Mexico, leaving families to pay the price for their health and lives.
These contaminants poison homes, children, and futures, as well as the surrounding wildlife and ecosystem, as heavy metals seep into the soil and waterways. We must take action now to end this cycle of environmental and human rights abuse.
Sign the petition to demand that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ban the dangerous export of hazardous waste and that both the U.S. and Mexican governments enforce stricter regulations and oversight!
