Protests in Turkey

The We Will Stop Femicide movement in Turkey began after a 17-year-old girl was murdered by her boyfriend and her decapitated body was found in a trash bin. Another brutal murder took place in 2020 where the woman, Pinar Gultekin, “was beaten and strangled to death” and then burned in a trash bin, according to The Guardian.

This led to protests and vigils around the country and sparked a popular “black and white selfie” campaign on social media. The idea was to show solidarity with the people in Turkey who often see the black and white photos in the press of murdered women.

Studies have shown that these incidents were not isolated cases either. According to The Guardian, “in 2019, 474 women were murdered, mostly by partners and relatives, the highest rate in a decade in which the numbers have increased year on year.”

Besides these tragic murders, the President of Turkey, Tayyip Erdogan, decided to withdraw his country from the Istanbul Convention last year, a treaty that served to prevent violence against women.
