A pet sitter named Marc Wong has transformed the life of a special-needs dog. Cody, a 3-year-old Maltipoo with cerebellar abiotrophy, faced mobility challenges and seizures, requiring constant care and assistance. However, with the help of Mark, Cody’s life has taken a remarkable turn. Wong’s ingenuity and determination have allowed Cody to experience newfound joys and independence.
Marc Wong, a sophomore student at The Academy for Dog Trainers, found his passion in working with animals. Although currently transitioning from a corporate job to the dog training field, Wong seized the opportunity to interact with dogs by offering pet-sitting services through Rover, an online pet services provider. Here, he met Cody. Little did he know that his encounter with the pup would become a transformative experience for both of them.
Cody’s degenerative disease, cerebellar abiotrophy, severely affected his mobility, rendering him unable to stand or walk without assistance. When Cody’s owner, Cecilia Liu, arranged for him to board with Wong while the family was away, the dog walker was confronted with the challenges of caring for a paraplegic canine who required frequent bathroom breaks.
Recognizing the toll it took on both Cody and himself to manually hold the dog in a standing position during potty breaks, Wong wanted to find a solution. Utilizing leftover PVC pipe from a yard irrigation project, he ingeniously crafted a cradle to Support Cody’s posture. The lightweight, durable, and easily assembled cradle allowed Cody to rest in an upright position during bathroom breaks without requiring physical Support.
To everyone’s delight, Cody’s response to the cradle was overwhelmingly positive. He became more alert, curious, and engaged with his surroundings. Encouraged by these developments, Wong decided to enhance the cradle by transforming it into a wheelchair. With the ability to move freely and independently, Cody’s progress skyrocketed. Videos capturing Cody’s determination show him quickly adapting to using his front paws to propel himself forward.

The impact of Wong’s creation extends beyond mobility. Cody’s newfound freedom has enabled him to interact more actively with other dogs. No longer confined to his bed, he can approach other pups for friendly interactions and engage with them at eye level. Wong’s invention has not only restored Cody’s physical mobility but also enriched his social interactions.
Cody’s continued use of the wheelchair has resulted in noticeable changes. His muscles have grown stronger, and he has regained a sense of independence. The once bedbound pup can now traverse rooms with surprising speed, experiencing a level of mobility that was previously unthinkable. Liu, Cody’s owner, expresses her gratitude for Wong’s invaluable contribution to Cody’s well-being, referring to him as a “lifesaver” and “teacher” to her beloved pet.
