There are an estimated 1.3 million alligators in the state of Florida alone. Alligators can be found in every one of Florida’s 67 counties and inhabit the state’s many rivers, lakes, canals, and other freshwater ways. Since they are widespread within the state, these reptiles frequently bump into humans when they venture from waterways into residential areas searching for food or another alligator to mate with. Although alligators rarely attack humans, they are opportunistic feeders and have been known to attack companion animals such as cats and dogs. Still, the cold-blooded critters should be respected as they can grow above 10 feet and are remarkably quick both in water and on land.

Recently, Pasco County residents had another hilarious encounter with one of these giant reptiles. When commuters arrived at one county bus stop, they found an unusual travel companion waiting to catch the bus. Laying under the sign for the bus stop was an alligator. Taking advantage of a patch of shade, the alligator appeared content to rest. Since alligators are cold-blooded reptiles, the gator needed a shady spot to relax and cool himself down. However, to the delight of many, the scaly creature looked like he was waiting to hop on a bus!
A picture of the alligator, posted to GoPasco County Public Transportation’s Twitter page was captioned, “Alligator Antics! Why did the Alligator cross the road? To get to the bus stop on time.” The lighthearted tweet garnered several responses. “Just another day in Florida…” wrote one user. Although the alligator was enjoying his patch of shade, an officer from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission arrived at the scene and helped the scaly commuter move to an equally pleasant spot in the nearby woods.
