In a large-scale rescue operation, more than 800 animals, including hedgehogs, ducks, chickens, and peacocks, were removed from a Texas pet store following repeated reports of animal cruelty. The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, working with the Houston SPCA, executed a search warrant at The List Pet Store in Santa Fe, located roughly 35 miles from Houston. The animals were swiftly relocated to safer environments.
The rescue effort included a wide variety of animals, such as puppies, kittens, rabbits, tortoises, snakes, lizards, birds, tarantulas, and more. According to local news outlet KHOU 11, the operation was part of an ongoing investigation into numerous allegations of animal neglect at the store.
Josh Sailor, Chief of Cruelty Investigations at the Houston SPCA, emphasized the need for the intervention, stating, “Despite multiple opportunities to improve the welfare of their animals, the persistent neglect at this business left us no choice but to work with law enforcement to intervene and rescue those animals.” Although no charges have been filed at this time, the fate of the animals will be determined by a judge at an upcoming hearing.
