On May 8, 2025, more than 40 Belgian Malinois dogs were rescued from a single apartment in Woodside, Queens, by Animal Care Centers of NYC (ACC) and the ASPCA. According to the ASPCA, the dogs were discovered in shockingly inhumane conditions—crammed into closets, cabinets, and hidden behind furniture. This rescue followed the eviction of the apartment’s tenant and quickly triggered a criminal animal cruelty investigation.

The rescued dogs had reportedly spent years deprived of daylight, space, and meaningful interaction. Belgian Malinois are highly intelligent and active animals, often used in police and military roles. Without proper care and stimulation, they can develop deep psychological scars. These dogs now face a long road to recovery, requiring expert rehabilitation before they can be considered for adoption.

This crisis comes as New York City’s shelters face an overwhelming strain. With over 340 large dogs already waiting for homes—more than three times their intended capacity—rescue organizations are in urgent need of Support. The arrival of 40 more animals only highlights the ongoing animal welfare emergency in the city.

What happened in Queens is a tragic reminder of how easily animals can become victims of neglect behind closed doors. It also calls attention to the lack of safeguards for both pets and overwhelmed shelters across the U.S.

If you’re able, consider fostering or adopting from your local shelter. And if you witness signs of neglect, report it. These animals don’t have a voice—but we do. Let’s use it to demand compassion and justice.
