Ready to feel inspired to help animals? Meet Sally, a woman who walks 10 dogs a day at her local animal shelter. Oh, and she happens to be 97 years old! Sally has been a volunteer at her local animal shelter for the past 40 years. She is widowed and without a family, so interacting with the dogs is a wonderful experience for her – and the pups!
Even in our darkest moments, animal companions provide us with strength and unconditional love. Interacting with animals has proven to help senior citizens in both their physical and mental health by helping boost their mood, increasing activity, and creating a routine. In the case of shelter animals, the relationship is mutually beneficial because, of course, the dogs are happy to get out of the shelter for a refreshing walk. Interestingly, a study from Pets Are Wonderful Support found, “Recently widowed women who owned pets experienced significantly fewer symptoms of physical and psychological disease and reported lower medication use than widows who did not own pets.”
Sally is remarkable and a true inspiration for us all to help animals. Please consider donating your time like Sally to your local animal shelter. Even if you are unable to walk dogs, there are still plenty of ways you can help! Animal shelters are always in need of volunteers to help with feeding all of the animals and cleaning kennels. Or if you enjoy more of behind the scenes action, you can assist with fundraisers or general office tasks. The important thing is that you are doing your part to help shelter animals!
