After more than 40 years of controversial research, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has finally shut down its last beagle experimentation lab on its campus, a move praised by Animal rights advocates nationwide. As reported by Fox News, the announcement came from new NIH director Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, who emphasized a fresh start for the agency amid mounting public scrutiny.
The closure follows a wave of backlash sparked by a report from the White Coat Waste Project, which accused the lab of subjecting over 2,000 beagles to horrific procedures—including infecting them with pneumonia-causing bacteria and forcing them into fatal septic shock. The case drew bipartisan criticism and gained public attention when Elon Musk, head of the Department of Government Efficiency, pledged to investigate NIH’s animal testing budgets.
Major groups like PETA welcomed the shutdown. Kathy Guillermo, PETA’s senior VP, called it “a wonderful start,” noting the broader campaign to end sepsis experiments on animals. Many of the dogs involved came from Envigo, a breeding company fined $35 million in 2024 for mass neglect at its Virginia facility. That same year, 4,000 beagles were rescued and rehomed thanks to efforts by groups like the Humane Society and Homeward Trails.
While the closure marks progress, activists warn the fight is far from over. Animal testing persists in other labs across the country, and organizations are calling for a complete end to taxpayer-funded animal cruelty.
If you believe science doesn’t need to come at the cost of animal suffering, now is the time to act. Support cruelty-free research, Donate to groups like PETA and the Humane Society, and demand greater transparency in government-funded labs. These beagles deserved better—and countless others still do.
