A 42-year-old Long Island resident, Christopher DiGiovanna, faces serious charges after authorities discovered 11 dogs living in appalling conditions in his Suffolk County home. Following a tip, the Suffolk County SPCA and local police raided the house on Saturday afternoon, uncovering a shocking scene.
Inside the residence, officers found dogs confined to a small, filthy room littered with hazardous items like exposed electrical wires, hypodermic needles, and other drug paraphernalia. The air was heavy with ammonia, making it difficult for responders to breathe. According to the SPCA, “The air was so noxious with ammonia from urine, feces, mold, and mildew that it stung investigators’ eyes and throats, making it difficult to breathe.”
Among the 11 dogs—ten Chihuahuas and one St. Bernard—many were malnourished, infested with fleas, and covered in urine. Preliminary tests revealed that at least two of the animals had been exposed to cocaine, adding to the severity of the case.
Rats were seen scurrying through holes in the walls, and other areas of the house were covered in fly excrement and cobwebs. The dire conditions prompted DiGiovanna’s arrest on 22 charges of animal cruelty—two for each dog. If convicted on all counts, he could face up to 22 years in prison.
In addition to these charges, DiGiovanna remains detained due to unrelated arrest warrants. The rescued dogs are now under the care of authorities and will be made available for adoption once they recover.
