Texas Dog Trainer Pleads Guilty to Animal Cruelty in Connection with Dog Deaths

An Arlington, Texas dog trainer, Alan Brown, pleaded guilty to one count of animal cruelty on Tuesday to the deaths of three dogs under his care. However, as part of a plea deal, Brown will avoid a formal conviction if he completes two years of community supervision. During this period, he is prohibited from boarding dogs but is still allowed to continue his work as a trainer.

The case came to light after the humans of two German shepherds and a Bernese poodle mix shared their tragic experiences with CBS News Texas. These pet parents had entrusted their dogs to Brown while they were on vacation, only to be informed later that their pets had died.

Last September, a Tarrant County grand jury indicted Brown on multiple counts of animal cruelty and evidence tampering, charges that could have led to up to two years of jail time. Trent Robinson, whose German shepherd Booster was one of the dogs that died, expressed his anguish in court, stating, “These were not dogs to us. These were our children, and they meant the world to us.”

The incidents, which occurred between 2021 and 2023, highlighted severe negligence on Brown’s part. In one case, Robinson was told his dog had died after failing to cool down properly following outdoor play. In another, Emeka and Masera Ndukwe lost their dog, Brooklyn, during a summer heat wave, with Brown failing to respond promptly to concerns about the dog’s well-being.

Following the exposure of these cases, a third dog owner came forward with a similar story, further solidifying the pattern of neglect. Additionally, Brown’s wife, a former police officer, had charges dropped against her in a related case involving obstruction or retaliation.

The city of Arlington had previously cited Brown multiple times for operating an unregistered business out of his home. Despite these warnings, the tragic loss of three dogs under his care has raised significant concerns about the lack of stricter regulations and enforcement.
