A group of celebrities has joined forces with World Animal Protection, US, in an open letter directed at the CEO of The Dolphin Company, the parent company of the Miami Seaquarium. Paul Wesley, Kelly Slater, Lisa Ann Walter, Elaine Hendrix, Nicole Williams English, Mýa, Alan Cumming, and Richa Moorjani, all esteemed advocates for animal welfare, have lent their voices to the plea for action.
The letter lays bare the distressing history of animal welfare violations at the Miami Seaquarium and mourns the loss of Tokitae (Lolita), who tragically passed away last August. It implores Eduardo Albor, CEO of The Dolphin Company, to heed the call for change and facilitate the release of captive animals to sanctuaries or reputable facilities where they can live free from the pressures of performance and visitor interaction.
The urgency of this plea is underscored by recent developments, as Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava has signaled the termination of Miami Seaquarium’s lease, citing a litany of USDA animal welfare violations. With the Seaquarium set to vacate its property, concerns mount over the fate of the animals under The Dolphin Company’s ownership, potentially facing relocation to other venues marked by similar cruelty.
