A new investigation has uncovered disturbing allegations against Harita Group, a major nickel mining company in Indonesia. According to The Guardian, leaked internal documents suggest the company knowingly concealed dangerously high levels of hexavalent chromium (Cr6) in the drinking water of Obi Island—posing serious health risks to the surrounding communities.
Cr6 is a toxic, cancer-causing chemical most widely known from the Erin Brockovich case. It can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver, and even cause skin burns. Although Indonesia allows up to 50 parts per billion (ppb) of Cr6 in water, initial tests in a nearby village showed over 60 ppb. Harita denied the findings, offering conflicting lab results. But the leaked documents reportedly show that the company’s own tests found even higher contamination—just one day after their denial.
This is particularly troubling given nickel’s role in clean technology. As a key material in electric vehicle batteries and renewable energy infrastructure, nickel is supposed to help reduce Pollution—not create new environmental disasters. If mining companies cut corners, the green transition risks being built on toxic foundations.
Environmental attorney Matthew Baird stressed the need for a “just transition,” warning that green tech must not come at the cost of human health or ecological destruction. Harita has not yet responded to the revelations.
It’s a sharp reminder that sustainability starts with accountability. Clean energy can’t be truly clean if its ingredients poison the planet along the way.
Let’s demand higher environmental standards for mining and stricter oversight of global supply chains. Greenwashing won’t stop climate change—but your voice can. Speak out, shop responsibly, and Support businesses that put people and the planet first.
