These Zero-Waste Lattes Served in an Avocado Shell Are Kind of Making Our Minds Explode

As much as we might fight the urge to join others in rolling our collective eyes at questionably appetizing food trends like rainbow bagels, cronuts, and others, we’re not going to lie — our stomachs are always inevitably tempted to get out there and try the latest craze. Or, in the case of the cronut, we’re at least going to try to make a vegan version of it or pick up a vegan doughssant from a local spot. Our obsession with food also leads us to braving long lines at food festivals under the hot summer sun and trying things that we’d never thought we’d ever see, like a vegan risotto burger. Yes, really. Simply put, the world of food can get weird — and we love every bit of it.

In the midst of the healthy beverage trend that’s given birth to colorful concepts that make our Instagram account look like we’re hip, like the unicorn latte and rainbow ice lattes, a new kind of beverage has emerged: a latte served in an avocado. We’ll give you a moment to wrap your brain around that.

At Truman Cafe in Victoria, Australia you can actually get a latte served in an avocado — hey, at least it’s zero waste.

Before you go off on how ridiculous our love of avocados is, the (in)famous avocado latte was actually created as a joke in response to a real estate tycoon who implied that Millennials can’t afford homes because they spend all of their money on avocado toast and lattes.

After the initial creation was posted to the cafe’s Instagram, baristas found that customers actually wanted to try it. One barista told New.com.au, “It was actually just a joke. We weren’t actually selling them but then someone came in today and wanted one. I think it’s ridiculous. It’s literally coffee in a piece of rubbish.”

…So, it’s a joke. But it sure is pretty to look at (and we’re really intrigued by the experience of drinking a latte served in an avocado).

Plus, we kind of like that it’s zero waste, in a sense. You know what else is better than ordering a latte in a to-go cup? Ordering one in an ice cream cone. You’re welcome for the idea.

At a time when injuries that happen while cutting an avocado are at such an all-time high that plastic surgeons refer to it as “avocado hand,” we’d say that we’ve reached peak avocado obsession. But hey, we’re not complaining. And we’ll be waiting patiently for cafes in the U.S. to pick up on this new trend — because even though it started as a joke, we’re on board with trying an almond milk avocado latte.

  1. Now try drinking that without spilling it all over yourself. I\’m sorry, but this is just stupid. Just buy a refillable travel mug that isn\’t plastic.
