If you are doubting the good in people, here’s a story that is sure to change your mind. It all began when Rebecca Pierce dropped her energetic Rat Terrier, Wally, off at her veterinarian’s kennel service for a few days. To her horror, when Rebecca returned to pick Wally up, it was discovered that her pup was unable to walk on all fours. The little guy was partially paralyzed, frantically dragging himself around by his front legs and the vet and kennel staff did not know what was wrong.
“They brought him in and I saw he couldn’t use his back two legs,” Pierce told FOX 13. “He looked like a seal. He was using his front paws to get around. He’d either be sitting side-saddle or dragging his legs behind him.”
A herniated disc in his spine is suspected, but not much could be done until the cause was found. Wally’s mom was not going to sit around while her baby struggled helplessly trying to get around, so she took to the Internet. In searching for help, Rebecca happened upon videos showing how to make doggie wheelchairs…off to Home Depot she went!
“I saw people on YouTube making dog wheelchairs. I thought, he’s still in good spirits. He’s still happy. He’s eating, he’s drinking. I bet I could make one of those!” said Rebecca.
Rebecca walked into Home Depot with Wally cradled in her arms and told two store employees that she needed supplies to build a doggie wheelchair. Instead of telling her where to find what she needed, the employees gathered all the supplies then spent the next two hours building Wally his rolling device. To top it off, store management insisted on covering all costs for the materials!
In the weeks that followed, Wally started going to a doggie chiropractor and is slowly regaining strength as well as some use of his back legs. In the meantime, Wally continues to use his little wheelchair to zoom around. Watch Wally go!
“We live in a time when people are pretty self-centered and greedy and it’s all about profits. This was just outstanding. I haven’t experienced anything like this before,” Rebecca said of the incredible kindness by Home Depot employees and management.
