A company has proposed building a 400 million dollar “monkey warehouse” in the town of Bainbridge, Georgia. This awful facility would house up to 30,000 long-tailed macaques. These monkeys would be specifically for animal experimentation, an awful act of animal cruelty that has little positive impact on our understanding of human reactions to pharmaceuticals.
The monkey warehouse has been proposed by Safer Human Medicine. The company has argued that the facility will “help make sure that medical research in the United States is not slowed because scientists and researchers do not have access to non-human primates”. However, the plan has met with significant opposition. This opposition is primarily from Animal rights activists who point out the inherent cruelty of animal testing. Some residents of Bainbridge have also voiced their opposition to the proposed facility.
Several high-level corporate executives behind the proposed monkey warehouse facility have previously been involved in shocking Animal rights scandals. According to information from the Humane Society of the United States, the chief executive operating officer of Safer Humane Medicine formerly was in a high-ranking role at Envigo. In 2022, close to 4,000 beagles were rescued from this facility. Additionally, two high-level employees have been linked to companies accused of obtaining wild, endangered long-tailed macaques for testing purposes.
Like other animals, monkeys suffer significantly as a result of animal experimentation. These smart, social animals are forced to undergo psychological and physical torture. Their lives are filled with fear and pain as they are denied the opportunity to live a natural existence. There is also evidence that animal experiments are largely useless, as their biology differs greatly from that of humans. Instead of forcing animals to undergo extreme pain and cruelty, the money that would be spent on this cruel monkey warehouse could be better used to further refine animal-free testing methods. This would have a greater benefit to both animals and humans.
