As history has shown us, zoos are not the happy places dedicated to conservation that most of them claim to be. Rather, zoos are typically profit-driven businesses who treat animals like commodities. With profit at the forefront of their goals, the health and well-being of zoo animals are often neglected, and too many captive animals suffer and die prematurely as a result.
According to a petition on Care2, an elephant named Bamboo is suffering in isolation at the Oklahoma City Zoo. Likely suffering from zoochosis, the petition explains that Bamboo has been acting out aggressively since her arrival at the zoo, and she has also been bullied by the other elephants there, which has caused her injuries. As a result, this socially complex and intelligent creature is being kept in isolation, where she is not at all thriving.
As the petition explains, Bamboo’s journey to the Oklahoma City Zoo began when the Woodland Park Zoo closed their elephant exhibit. Bamboo and two other elephants, Chai and Watoto, were expected to be sent to reputable sanctuaries after this, but instead, Watoto was euthanized before she was released, and Chai and Bamboo were sent to the Oklahoma City Zoo, where Chai died just eight months after arriving.
Bamboo’s treatment at the Oklahoma City Zoo is in no way humane or acceptable. Please take a moment to sign this petition demanding that Bamboo be released to a legitimate elephant sanctuary for the remainder of her years.
And please share this story with your network to help spread the word about why zoos are unsafe and unhealthy environments for animals. Your dollar counts, so remember to never Support zoos or other businesses that exploit animals. The suffering of these captive animals will end only after the demand for zoos ends!
