Michigan may be sitting on a surprising clean fuel source that forms naturally underground. According to Vivian La at Interlochen Public Radio, Governor Gretchen Whitmer wants the state to explore whether “geologic hydrogen” could help power a shift away from fossil fuels.

Hydrogen already plays a role in heavy industry, trucking, shipping, and fertilizer. The problem is that most hydrogen today takes a lot of energy to make, and it often depends on fossil fuels. That is why the idea of tapping hydrogen that already exists beneath the Earth feels so tempting. If the gas can be found in useful amounts, it could lower costs and cut emissions in sectors that struggle to electrify.

Researchers are still working out how this hydrogen forms. Some theories point to deep processes that have been happening for billions of years. Others involve underground reactions that split water. Either way, the challenge is access, because drilling is still required.

Michigan looks promising because of its geology. A 2025 U.S. Geological Survey report mapped areas with higher potential for buried hydrogen, and Michigan ranked relatively high. Scientists say features like the Midcontinent Rift and the Michigan Basin could provide pathways for hydrogen to move closer to the surface. Still, the USGS also cautioned that many potential deposits may be too deep, offshore, or too small to recover economically.

Even if the resource exists, new pipelines and processing facilities may be needed. Michigan’s regulators also have to update rules written for oil and gas. If the state gets this right, it could Support cleaner industry while protecting the environment and local communities.

Let’s push for clean energy choices that reduce harm, defend wildlife, and make plant based living easier for everyone.
