The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under the Trump administration is moving to eliminate all federal limits on greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-burning power plants, according to The New York Times’ Lisa Friedman. Internal documents reviewed by the Times reveal a proposed regulation that downplays the role of coal and gas plants in Climate change—despite the fact that U.S. power plants are the second-largest domestic source of greenhouse gas emissions.
The EPA claims emissions from these plants don’t “significantly” impact public health or climate because they represent a shrinking portion of global output. But scientists overwhelmingly disagree. Power plants in the U.S. alone emitted roughly 1.5 billion metric tons of greenhouse gases in 2023—more than the total emissions of most countries. Globally, such facilities account for around 30% of climate-driving Pollution.
Critics, including Vickie Patton from the Environmental Defense Fund, argue that repealing these standards is a blatant misuse of the EPA’s legal authority. She warned it “puts millions of people in harm’s way” and ignores the environmental and health benefits that come with reducing Pollution.
The proposed rollback includes undoing Biden-era rules requiring carbon capture and lower-emission technologies. It also threatens the legal foundation for future regulations by targeting a 2009 EPA finding that greenhouse gases endanger public health.
If finalized, the move could stall or even block future federal climate action, despite mounting scientific evidence and global calls for emissions reductions. Legal battles are likely, but the EPA appears determined to fast-track the changes before the end of the year.
If you’re frustrated by this ongoing dismantling of environmental protections, don’t wait—contact your representatives, Support climate organizations, and choose plant-based and sustainable lifestyles. Every action, no matter how small, contributes to the bigger solution.
