Two of the nation’s leading environmental organizations have taken the Trump administration to court over what they say was a covert effort to undermine U.S. climate protections. According to Reuters reporter Valerie Volcovici, the Environmental Defense Fund and the Union of Concerned Scientists allege that Energy Secretary Chris Wright secretly assembled a panel of climate skeptics to produce a report used to justify reversing federal greenhouse gas emission rules—without public notice or input.
The lawsuit, filed in federal district court in Massachusetts, claims the so-called Climate Working Group operated outside the public eye, sidestepping the transparency requirements of the Federal Advisory Committee Act. This law mandates public disclosure for advisory groups influencing federal policy. Plaintiffs argue the report’s conclusions contradict decades of peer-reviewed science and were instrumental in the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to roll back its foundational climate finding.
Critics say this move not only ignores the overwhelming scientific consensus that fossil fuel use is driving extreme weather and climate instability, but also strips away vital climate data and reporting. With record-breaking heat, stronger storms, and worsening floods already costing the U.S. trillions in damages, such actions could delay the urgent transition to clean energy.
Gretchen Goldman, president of the Union of Concerned Scientists, stressed that “decades of rigorous scientific analysis” confirm fossil fuels’ role in accelerating climate disasters. She urged the public to question who benefits from policies that reject this reality.
At a time when the climate crisis is intensifying, dismantling protections in favor of fossil fuel interests risks locking the U.S. into even more destructive patterns. Supporting organizations that defend climate science, voting for leaders committed to clean energy, and reducing personal reliance on fossil fuels are concrete ways to push back against this rollback. The fight for a livable planet needs every voice—because silence serves only those profiting from environmental harm.
